How to Check if DVD Decoder Software is Installed...

By default, Windows XP does not come with compatible DVD decoder software
installed. To confirm if you have Windows XP-compatible DVD decoder
software
on your system:

Click Start  and  Run
Type in : dvdupgrd /detect  than click OK

A Windows dialog box will open with identifying information about the
installed software. If “no decoders found” is displayed, no decoder is
installed and you cannot play DVDs.
Simply follow the install wizard and install the MPEG Decoder.
Reboot the computer and try to play a DVD wit windows media player.

Also make sure that you have the latest version of windows media player otherwise
The playback might be a bit choppy.

There are many sites offering a DVD decoder to download. Some of them have additional
programs bundled with it and have nice features. But to play DVDs wit windows media
Player needs only the MPEG decoder and you are done .Enjoy.
