Q: How to configure cat 5 cable pin outs
A: We have done it like this
Well, one area of great confusion with Ethernet is the connector pin out and color configuration .
The standard 10/100 Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet copper cable is connected with the RJ-45 plug and
RJ-45 socket
The socket is mounted on the board or wall plate and the plug is attached to the end of the Cat 5 cable.
The following figure shows the plug and the socket indicating the pin 1 location.
The following figure shows the two color code schemes:
Straight thru cables for connecting non
Identical devices ( PC to Hub or PC to switch)
Crossover cable for connecting identical devices
(PC to PC or Hub to Hub).
Signal routes in straight thru and crossover cable
When connecting identical devices the cables have to cross over otherwise the transmitting
pair from one device would transmit into the transmitter of other device instead of into
the receiver input .There would be no communication. It would be like trying to talk into somebody’s
mouth instead of his ears.
